What this size is for

Under one cubic foot covers a lot of different machines. Ceramic test kilns for glaze samples, jewelry and precious metal clay kilns, small glass fusing kilns, enameling kilns, and compact knife and heat treating ovens all live in this size.

Buy this size if you are testing rather than producing, working small, or adding a second kiln so you are not tying up your main one. It is also the practical choice when you have no 240V circuit and no appetite for installing one.

One cubic foot is smaller than it sounds.A kiln this size fires a handful of test tiles, a few pieces of jewelry, or one or two mugs. If you want to fire a full set of dinnerware, you want at least 3 cubic feet.
Check what the kiln is actually built for.This size band mixes ceramic kilns, glass kilns and steel heat treating ovens. They look similar and are not interchangeable. Glass kilns heat from the lid, ceramic kilns from the sides.
Temperature range varies enormously here.Some of these reach cone 10 and 2350F. Others stop at 1700F, which is fine for glass and enamel but will not fire stoneware. Check the maximum temperature on the product page.

Questions about these kilns

What can I actually fire in a kiln under 1 cubic foot?

Test tiles and glaze samples, jewelry and precious metal clay, small fused glass pieces, enamel work, beads, and one or two small pots at a time. It is not enough space to fire a production run or a full dinner set.

Do these plug into a normal outlet?

Most of them, yes. The majority of kilns this size are 120V and run from a standard household outlet. A few draw enough current to need a dedicated 20 or 30 amp circuit. Voltage, amperage, required breaker and plug type are on every product page.

Is a test kiln worth buying if I already have a big kiln?

For most working potters, yes. Glaze testing in a large kiln means firing a nearly empty chamber and waiting a full cycle. A test kiln gives you an answer in a fraction of the time and electricity, and frees your main kiln for real work.

What is the difference between a test kiln and a jewelry kiln?

A ceramic test kiln is built to reach high temperatures quickly for glaze and clay samples. A jewelry or PMC kiln is optimised for precise holds at lower temperatures and often has a different chamber shape. Buy for the material you actually work in.

Can I fire glass in a small ceramic kiln?

Sometimes, but results are less predictable. Glass wants even heat from above, which is why glass kilns put the elements in the lid. A ceramic kiln with side elements can fuse small pieces but is more likely to give uneven results across a flat piece.

Will a kiln this small fire to cone 10?

Several do. Others stop well short. The maximum temperature is listed on every product page, and it is the first thing to check if you fire stoneware or porcelain.

How is a small kiln delivered?

Many kilns this size ship by ground rather than freight, which is cheaper and faster than a freight truck. The shipping cost is shown at checkout based on your address.
