What this size is for

One to three cubic feet is the smallest size most people would call a real studio kiln. You can fire a shelf of mugs, a few bowls, or a modest glaze load in one go, and many models in this range reach cone 10.

Buy this size if you are working at home, firing regularly but not in volume, or short on space. It is also a sensible classroom second kiln, because two small kilns let you run bisque and glaze at the same time.

Most of these need 240V.Once you go past about 1 cubic foot, a dedicated 240V circuit becomes the norm. Budget for an electrician if you do not already have one.
Chamber proportions matter more than volume.A 2 cubic foot kiln that is tall and narrow suits vases. A wide shallow one suits platters. Interior dimensions are listed on every product page.
Think about how often you want to fire.A kiln this size fills faster than you expect once you are producing regularly. Many potters who buy at the bottom of this range wish they had gone one size up within a year.

Questions about these kilns

Is 2 cubic feet big enough for a home studio?

For a lot of people, yes. Two cubic feet fires roughly a shelf of mugs or a handful of bowls per load. If you throw most days, you will fill it quickly and may prefer 3 to 5 cubic feet instead.

Do kilns this size fire to cone 10?

Many do. Models with HE or High Fire in the name are built for cone 10 and 2350F. Some in this range top out lower, which is fine for earthenware and mid fire clay but not for stoneware or porcelain.

Will I need an electrician?

Usually. Most kilns between 1 and 3 cubic feet run on 240V and need their own dedicated circuit with a correctly sized breaker. The required breaker size and plug configuration are listed on every product page.

How long does a firing take?

A typical bisque firing runs 8 to 12 hours plus cooling, and a glaze firing to cone 10 can run longer. Smaller kilns heat and cool faster than large ones, which is one of the real advantages of this size.

Do I need a vent?

It is strongly recommended if the kiln is indoors. A downdraft vent removes fumes during firing and supplies fresh air, which improves glaze results. Fit it at installation rather than retrofitting later.

What is the difference between this and a test kiln?

Capacity and intent. A test kiln fires samples. A kiln in this range fires finished work you intend to sell or use. If you are making pots rather than testing glazes, start here.

Are shelves and posts included?

Sometimes, but not always. Check the What's Included tab on the product page. If a furniture kit is not listed, add one, because you cannot fire a loaded kiln without shelves, posts and kiln wash.

How is a kiln this size delivered?

By freight, curbside, with liftgate service where it is needed and a scheduled delivery appointment. The carrier calls you when it reaches the local terminal. Inspect the pallet before signing.
