What you get in this price range

This is where almost every first kiln lives. At this price you are looking at test kilns, small jewelry and PMC kilns, compact glass fusing kilns, and the smallest ceramic kilns each manufacturer builds. Chambers run roughly 0.1 to 1 cubic foot.

Buy in this range if you are firing test tiles, jewelry, small glass, beads, or single mugs and bowls. It is also the right range for a second kiln when you want to test glazes without tying up your main one, and for classrooms that need several small kilns rather than one large one.

Check the amperage, not just the voltage.Most kilns here run on 120V, but a few need a dedicated 20-amp or 30-amp circuit rather than any wall outlet. The amperage and breaker size are listed on every product page.
Cone rating varies a lot in this range.Some small kilns reach cone 10 and some stop at cone 04 or 1700F. If you fire stoneware or porcelain you need a high fire model, and the cheapest kilns here will not do it.
Shelves and posts are usually extra.A kiln arrives empty. Budget for a furniture kit, and for kiln wash, before your first firing.

Questions about kilns in this range

What is the cheapest kiln that can fire to cone 10?

Several kilns under $1,500 reach cone 10 and 2350F, which covers stoneware and porcelain. Others in this range stop at cone 04 or 1700F and suit low fire clay, glass and jewelry only. Filter by our Cone 10 Kilns collection, or check the maximum temperature listed on each product page before you order.

Can I run a kiln in this price range on a normal outlet?

Most of them, yes. The majority of kilns under $1,500 are 120V models that plug into a standard household outlet. A few draw enough current to need their own dedicated circuit. Every product page lists voltage, amperage, required breaker size and the NEMA plug configuration.

How small is too small?

A kiln smaller than about 0.3 cubic feet fires a handful of test tiles, jewelry pieces or beads. If you want to fire a set of mugs in one go, look at the upper end of this range or at the $1,500 to $3,000 band. Most people who buy the very smallest kiln as a first kiln outgrow it.

Do these kilns come with shelves and posts?

Not always. Kiln furniture is listed separately on most models. Check the What's Included tab on the product page, and add a furniture kit if one is not listed. You cannot fire a loaded kiln without shelves, posts and kiln wash.

Is freight included in the price?

No. We charge a discounted flat rate freight fee based on the size of the kiln and where it is going, shown at checkout before you pay. Smaller kilns in this range often ship by ground rather than freight, which costs less.

Can I return a kiln if it turns out to be too small?

Return requests can be submitted within 30 days of delivery. The kiln needs to be in original packaging and in new, resellable condition, and a restocking fee may apply. Completing the manufacturer's recommended first test firing does not by itself make a kiln non-returnable.

What is the difference between a test kiln and a small kiln?

A test kiln is built to fire small samples fast, usually a few test tiles or glaze samples, and often reaches full temperature more quickly than a production kiln. A small kiln is a scaled down production kiln. If you are glaze testing, a test kiln saves hours. If you are making finished work, buy the small kiln.

Will a kiln this size work for glass fusing?

Some of them. Glass kilns heat from the lid rather than the sides, which gives even heat across a flat piece. A ceramic kiln with side elements can fuse glass but results are less predictable. Look at our Glass Kilns collection for models built for it.
