What this size is for

This is the size most working potters end up with. Three to seven cubic feet holds several shelves, fires a genuine production load, and still runs on a single phase 240V supply that a normal building can provide.

Buy this size if you sell your work, teach, or fire weekly. It is the standard single kiln for a home studio that has outgrown a small one, and the usual starting point for a school or community studio.

Check the breaker size before you commit.Kilns at the top of this range can need a 60 amp circuit or more. Confirm your panel has the capacity, not just a spare slot.
Multi zone control earns its money here.Taller chambers fire less evenly. Multi zone control adjusts top, middle and bottom separately and makes a noticeable difference to consistency.

Questions about these kilns

What size kiln do most professional potters use?

Something between 5 and 7 cubic feet is the most common single studio kiln. It fires enough work to be worth the electricity and the time, without needing three phase power or a commercial building.

How many mugs fit in a 7 cubic foot kiln?

Roughly a hundred standard mugs across the full stack, depending on shelf spacing and handle size. A 5 cubic foot kiln holds appreciably fewer. If you know your typical load, call or text (470) 264-3563 and we will tell you what will actually fit.

Is one large kiln better than two small ones?

It depends how you work. One large kiln is cheaper per cubic foot and fires more efficiently. Two smaller kilns let you bisque and glaze at once and keep working if one is down for element replacement. Schools usually prefer two.

What electrical supply do these need?

Single phase 240V in most cases, on a dedicated circuit with a substantial breaker. Some models offer three phase for commercial buildings. The exact requirement is on each product page, and it varies more between models than people expect.

Do I need a vent at this size?

Yes, if it is indoors. A kiln this size moves a lot of air and produces real fumes during bisque firing. A downdraft vent is close to essential for indoor installation.

How long do elements last?

It depends on how hot and how often you fire. Regular cone 10 firing wears elements considerably faster than cone 6. Elements are a consumable and replacing them is routine maintenance, not a fault.

Can a kiln this size go in a garage?

Often yes, with adequate clearance from walls and combustibles, a suitable circuit, and ventilation. Manufacturers specify minimum clearances and they are not optional. Check the product page and ask us if you are unsure.
