What you get in this price range

This is the busiest price band in the catalog and the one most serious hobbyists end up in. Chambers here run roughly 1 to 5 cubic feet, most models reach cone 10, and nearly all of them use a digital controller with programmable firing schedules.

Buy in this range if you are setting up a home studio, firing stoneware or porcelain, or replacing a small kiln you have outgrown. It is also the standard range for a single classroom kiln, and for knifemakers buying a dedicated heat treating oven.

Almost everything here needs 240V on a dedicated circuit.Budget for an electrician unless you already have a suitable circuit. The required breaker size and plug configuration are listed on every product page, and they vary more than people expect.
Check the chamber shape, not just the cubic feet.Two kilns with the same volume can have very different proportions. A tall narrow chamber suits vases, a wide shallow one suits platters and tiles. Interior dimensions are on every product page.
Decide about a vent before you install.A downdraft vent makes indoor firing far more pleasant and helps glaze results. It is much easier to fit at installation than to retrofit later.

Questions about kilns in this range

What size kiln do most home potters buy?

Somewhere between 2 and 5 cubic feet, which is most of this price band. That is enough to fire a full shelf of mugs or bowls in one load without waiting weeks to fill it. Smaller than about 1.5 cubic feet and you will fire more often than you want to.

Do I need an electrician for a kiln in this range?

Almost certainly. Most kilns between $1,500 and $3,000 run on 240V and need their own dedicated circuit, correctly sized breaker and appropriate wire gauge. A licensed electrician should do that work. The exact breaker size and plug type are listed on every product page.

Can these kilns fire to cone 10?

Most of them, yes. Models with HE or High Fire in the name are built for cone 10 and 2350F, which covers stoneware and porcelain. Some models in this range top out at cone 6 or cone 8, which is fine for mid fire clay but not for high fire work. Check the maximum temperature on the product page.

How long does a kiln in this range take to arrive?

What is the difference between a top loading and a front loading kiln?

Top loaders are less expensive, lighter and more common. Front loaders let you load shelves without leaning into the chamber, which matters for bad backs and for heavy work, and they tend to hold heat more evenly. There is a Front-Loading Kilns collection if that is what you need.

Do I need a kiln vent?

It is strongly recommended for any kiln installed indoors. A downdraft vent pulls fumes out during firing, improves glaze results by supplying fresh air, and makes the room usable while the kiln runs. Fit it at installation rather than later.

Is freight included in the price?

No. We charge a discounted flat rate freight fee based on the size of the kiln and where it is going, shown at checkout before you pay. Eligible kiln deliveries include curbside freight, residential delivery, liftgate service where it is needed, a scheduled delivery appointment and tracking.

What else do I need to budget for?

Shelves, posts and kiln wash if a furniture kit is not included, the electrical work, and a vent if you are firing indoors. Together those often add several hundred dollars to the total, and skipping them means you cannot fire the day the kiln arrives.
