Jen-Ken · Glass Kiln · Crucible Series Jen-Ken Crucible 1813 Glass Melting Kiln Model Crucible 1813 · 240V · 18" x 13" chamber · 2,300°F The Crucible 1813 is the large melting kiln in Jen-Ken's glass range — 18 inches across and 13 deep, 1.91 cubic feet of chamber for melting and working cullet at volume. The way it is used is a sequence, not a single temperature: up to 2,300°F to get the cullet melted, down to around 2,050–2,100°F to gather, down to 1,800°F for controlled squeezing and for holding between sessions. Solid-state relays are fitted as standard, which is what lets it sit at a working temperature for hours without mechanical relay wear. It is 150 lbs on a 240V 45-amp circuit — a serious electrical job, and worth noting that we have left the breaker row blank because Jen-Ken's published figure cannot be wired to their own receptacle. Like all electric crucible kilns it melts cullet, not raw batch.

Key features
Solid-state relaysFitted as standard. A melting kiln holds a working temperature for hours, and SSRs take that duty cycle without the mechanical wear.
Kiln shelf and kiln brickBoth on Jen-Ken's included list for this model.
Kiln standIncluded by Jen-Ken. It brings an 18-inch chamber to a height you can work out of with a gather iron.
Orton AutoFire 3-button controllerProgrammable ramp-and-hold, which is what a melt-then-work-then-hold sequence needs.
Instruction manualJen-Ken's printed manual, including firing guidance and their electrical requirements.
2-year limited warrantyJen-Ken's brick-kiln warranty, direct from the factory to the original purchaser.
Optional accessories
CruciblesNot included with this model, unlike the Crucible 11. Thin-wall pots are consumables — tell us how many colours you want to hold and what size chamber space you want to give each, and we will quote them.
Gather irons, punties and hand toolsThe kiln melts the glass; the tools do the work. Tell us whether you are gathering, squeezing or pouring and we will point you at what suits.
Kiln wash and shelf primerGlass will weld itself to an unprimed shelf. Most glass workers go through primer steadily, so it is worth adding to a first order.
Controller upgradeJen-Ken fits the Orton AutoFire 3-button as standard and offers the Orton AutoFire Slide touchscreen and the SDS TAP II in its place. It is a factory option rather than a checkout add-on — call us and we will quote it.
Common questions
Why is there no breaker size in the spec table?Because the figure on Jen-Ken's page cannot be built as written. They list a 60-amp breaker behind a NEMA 6-50R receptacle — a 6-50R is a 50-amp device and must not sit on a 60-amp circuit. The wiring table in Jen-Ken's own owner's manual gives every 45-amp kiln in their range #6 wire, a 50-amp fuse and a 6-50R, which is coherent but contradicts the page here. The breaker size is one of the two figures you hand your electrician, so we will not print one we cannot stand behind. Call or email us before anything is wired and we will get the nameplate figure from the factory.
What is safe to rely on?240V single phase, a 45-amp draw and 10,800 watts — the arithmetic confirms it, since 240V × 45A is exactly 10,800W — on a NEMA 6-50R receptacle with #6 copper. Those are published above and agree across Jen-Ken's sources. #6 copper carries 65 amps at 75°C, so the wire is sized for whatever the breaker question resolves to. Jen-Ken's manual adds that more than about 30 feet from the panel may need the next heavier gauge, which on a melting kiln that runs for hours is worth taking seriously.
What is the firing sequence?Jen-Ken publishes it in stages rather than as one number, and it is the useful way to think about the kiln. Up to 2,300°F to melt the cullet; 2,050–2,100°F to gather; 1,800°F for controlled squeezing; and 1,800°F to hold between working sessions. The 2,300°F ceiling is what you need to get there, but most of the kiln's working life is spent well below it.
Can I make glass from batch in it?No — Jen-Ken says so explicitly, and it is worth repeating because it is the mistake that ruins one of these kilns. Electric crucible kilns are for melting cullet. Making glass from raw batch produces caustic fumes that attack the thermocouple and the kiln brick, and it will destroy the kiln quickly. Cullet only.
What cone will it reach?Jen-Ken publishes no cone rating for any kiln in their glass line, and we have not invented one. The published maximum is in the table above. Cone numbers are a ceramics measure and this is a glass-melting kiln, so the temperature and how steadily it holds it are the figures that matter.
How is this different from the Crucible 11?Volume and the electrical job. The 1813 is 18" x 13" at 1.91 cubic feet on a 45-amp circuit; the Crucible 11 is 11" x 9" at 0.55 cubic feet on 17 amps and comes with three crucibles for holding several colours. Buy the 1813 when you need a bigger melt and are prepared for a 50-amp-class dedicated run; buy the 11 for roll-ups and multi-colour work on a much lighter circuit.
What actually comes in the crate?Jen-Ken lists the Orton AutoFire 3-button controller, a kiln shelf, kiln brick, a kiln stand, solid-state relays and the instruction manual. Crucibles are not on that list for this model — order them with the kiln. Call or email us and we will confirm the full set before you commit.
How long until it ships?Jen-Ken builds to order in Lakeland, Florida. Their own guidance is that kilns can take several weeks to months depending on the production queue. Call us and we will get you the current estimate before you commit.
Does buying from Peach State Pottery affect my warranty? No. We are an authorized Jen-Ken dealer, so the factory two-year warranty applies exactly as it would buying direct. Keep your proof of purchase.
Talk to us before you book the electrician. We are authorized Jen-Ken dealers based in Georgia. Jen-Ken's own figures for this kiln's breaker do not add up, so we have left that one row blank rather than print something an electrician cannot build. Call us and we will get the nameplate figure from the factory before anything is installed.

Common questions about this kiln

Still stuck? Call or text (470) 264-3563 and talk it through with a real person.

Is freight delivery included in the price?

No. Kiln prices do not include freight, and we do not quietly build it into the product price. Freight is charged at a flat rate based on your delivery address and is shown at checkout. Liftgate service is included when it is needed, and standard delivery is curbside. You can estimate your delivered cost with the ZIP code tool above the Add to Cart button.

Can I return this kiln if it is not right?

Return requests can be submitted within 30 days of delivery. The kiln needs to be in its original packaging, in new and resellable condition, and approved before it is sent back. A restocking fee may apply. Completing the manufacturer's recommended first test firing does not by itself make a kiln non-returnable, so you can confirm it works before you commit. Full terms are on our Returns page.

What electrical supply do I need for this kiln?

The Specifications tab on this page lists this model's voltage, amperage, required breaker size and NEMA plug configuration. Most 240V kilns need their own dedicated circuit fitted by a licensed electrician, while many 120V models run from a standard household outlet. If you are unsure what your space can support, call or text (470) 264-3563 before ordering.

Does this kiln come with a warranty?

Yes. This kiln carries the Jen-Ken manufacturer warranty. Coverage length, what is included and any registration deadline are listed in the Specifications tab on this page. We are an authorized Jen-Ken dealer, which is a condition of warranty coverage on most kiln brands.

What comes with the kiln, and what do I need to buy separately?

The What's Included tab on this page lists exactly what ships with this kiln. Most kilns need shelves, posts and kiln wash before your first firing, and these are not always included. A vent is recommended for indoor installations. Any add-ons available for this model are shown above the Add to Cart button.
