Common questions
What can I heat treat in a chamber this long?
The 45-inch chamber is built for full-length swords, machetes, and other long blades that won't fit in shorter knife ovens, as well as batch loads of several standard-length knives at once. At 2350°F max, it covers hardening and tempering for high-carbon steels (1095, 1084, 1075) and common tool steels (O1, A2, D2).
Why does the KM45 use a solid-state relay instead of mercury relays?
The KM45 ships standard with a solid-state relay (SSR) and aluminum heat sink, plus a dedicated backup safety relay. SSRs switch faster and more quietly than mechanical relays and have no moving parts to wear out, which matters over the long, even heating cycles a 45-inch chamber requires.
Does the KM45 come with a stand?
Yes — unlike some of Paragon's shorter knife ovens, the KM45 ships in a rigid steel case with a built-in stand, so there's no separate stand to purchase or assemble. It's ready to plug in and stand on its own in your shop.
How does the KM45 compare to the KM36 and KM24?
All three run on 240V single-phase power and reach the same 2350°F maximum, differing mainly in chamber depth — 24", 36", and 45" respectively. The KM45 is the choice for bladesmiths who regularly work with swords or other long-format blades and need the extra length; for standard knife lengths, the shorter models are more space-efficient.
