Common questions
What is raku firing, and why does this kiln only reach 1900°F?
Raku is a fast, low-fire technique where pots are pulled from the kiln while still glowing hot and placed into a reduction chamber with combustible material, producing the technique's signature crackle glazes and metallic surfaces. Raku glazes mature well below stoneware temperatures, so 1900°F is plenty for the technique — this isn't a kiln for firing stoneware or porcelain clay bodies to maturity.
Can I really plug this into a regular household outlet?
Yes — the Home Artist's standard configuration runs on a normal 120V household circuit, no electrician required. If you plan to fire it frequently, the optional SSR relay upgrade is worth considering for longer relay life. A 240V single-phase version is also available if you'd prefer to run it on a dedicated circuit.
How portable is this kiln in practice?
The Home Artist is built around a collapsible luggage-style carrier with wheels, so it rolls like a suitcase and folds down for storage between sessions. Many owners use it for backyard raku days, workshops, community classes, and outdoor demonstrations where a full-size studio kiln isn't an option.
What size pieces can I fire?
The chamber comfortably accommodates pieces up to the size of a 10" china plate. It's sized for the bowls, plates, and smaller sculptural forms typical of raku work, rather than large-scale pieces — those need a bigger studio kiln.
Is this a good first raku kiln for a beginner?
Yes. The Home Artist is one of the more accessible entry points into raku — it's plug-and-play on standard household power, includes a touchscreen controller with digital cone-firing capability, and doesn't require any electrical upgrades to get started. As an authorized Paragon dealer, Peach State Pottery backs it with the full manufacturer's warranty when registered within 30 days of delivery.
Not sure if the Home Artist is right for your raku work? We'll help you compare firing capacity, power options, and accessories to find the perfect fit.
