Common questions
What steel types can I heat treat in the HS-360?
The HS-360 reaches 2000°F, making it suitable for most common knife steels including 1095, 1084, 5160, O1, and A2. It handles carbon steels and most oil-hardening tool steels effectively. Some high-alloy stainless steels like CPM-154 and 440C that require temperatures around 1900-1950°F will work, but super-alloys requiring 2100°F+ like CPM-S35VN or M4 exceed this oven's maximum rating. The 6″ × 6″ × 10″ chamber accommodates blades up to approximately 9″ in length.
Does this oven support controlled atmosphere heat treating?
The standard HS-360 operates in ambient atmosphere. An optional atmosphere inlet port can be added to introduce inert gases like argon or nitrogen, which helps prevent oxidation and decarburization during the hardening cycle. This is particularly valuable when heat treating high-carbon steels where surface condition is critical. Controlled atmosphere setups require additional gas handling equipment and proper ventilation, which are not included.
Should I choose 120V or 240V for my workshop?
The 120V model plugs into standard household outlets and requires no electrician, making it the most convenient option for hobbyist knife makers and small workshops. However, 240V models typically heat faster and maintain temperature more efficiently during extended cycles. If you're running multiple heat treating cycles daily or working in a dedicated shop with 240V already available, the 240V version offers better performance. Consult with a licensed electrician to determine your building's electrical capacity before ordering.
What's the difference between hardening and tempering temperatures?
Hardening occurs at the steel's critical temperature (typically 1450-1950°F depending on alloy) where the steel is heated until it becomes non-magnetic, then rapidly quenched in oil or water. Tempering happens at much lower temperatures (300-600°F) after hardening to reduce brittleness while maintaining hardness. The HS-360's 2000°F maximum handles both processes. Most knife makers perform multiple tempering cycles at 400-500°F for one to two hours each to achieve optimal toughness in the 58-62 HRC range.
Is the warranty valid if I buy from Peach State Pottery?
Yes. Peach State Pottery is an authorized Hot Shot Ovens dealer, which means your oven includes full manufacturer warranty coverage. The one-year limited warranty must be registered within 30 days of delivery. Purchasing from unauthorized resellers or used equipment sources voids warranty coverage and may leave you without manufacturer support for parts or technical service.
Not sure if the HS-360 is the right heat treating oven for your workshop? Our team can help you compare chamber sizes, voltage requirements, and temperature ratings to match your steel types and blade dimensions.

Return Shipping Damage

Peach State Pottery is not responsible for damage incurred during return shipping.

We strongly recommend taking photos of the return packaging before shipment and using a prepaid, insured shipping method. Any damage that occurs during return shipping may be deducted from your refund.

Refunds

Once your return is received and inspected, you will be notified whether your refund has been approved or rejected.

If approved, the refund will be issued back to the original payment method. Please allow time for your bank or credit card company to process the refund after it has been issued.

Late or Missing Refunds

If your refund has been approved but has not appeared yet, please check your bank or credit card statement, contact your card issuer or bank, and then contact Peach State Pottery if you still need help.

Exchanges

Exchanges are generally only available for items that are defective, damaged, or approved under the applicable manufacturer policy.
