They are light, they heat and cool fast, and Jen-Ken specify them for their fiber-lined kilns. They also cost roughly twice a cordierite shelf of the same size, which is the honest trade for the weight and the thermal response. Three sizes: 13" full-round, 15" square and 25" square.

These are the three fiber shelves Jen-Ken makes. If you have been quoted a rectangular fiber shelf, talk to us first — we could not find one in Jen-Ken’s catalogue and would rather confirm with the factory than sell you something that does not exist.

Common questions
Do I need a fiber shelf or a cordierite one?Go by what your kiln is lined with and what Jen-Ken specify for that model. Fiber-lined kilns take fiber shelves. If your kiln is brick, a cordierite shelf is cheaper and more rigid and there is no reason to pay for fiber.
Why are they so much more expensive?A 15" cordierite square is $70 and the fiber equivalent is $140. You are paying for low mass — it heats and cools much faster, which matters for glass schedules, and it is light enough to handle one-handed.
Are fiber shelves fragile?They are softer than cordierite and will mark if you drag ware across them, but they do not warp the way a thin cordierite shelf can over a wide span. Lift rather than slide, and prime the surface.
