Low-Fire Kilns

Low fire generally means cone 06 to cone 04, roughly 1830F to 1945F. It covers earthenware, terracotta, most commercial low fire glazes, china paint, decals, lustres and enamel work.

No. Stoneware needs cone 5 to cone 10, well above what these reach. Firing stoneware in a low fire kiln leaves it underfired, porous and structurally weak. If you plan to work in stoneware, buy a high fire kiln.

Cost, power and simplicity. Low fire kilns are often cheaper, frequently run on 120V, and put less stress on elements so they last longer. If your work genuinely stays low fire, you are not paying for headroom you will never use.

It can be, with the right clay and a well fitted glaze. Earthenware is more porous than stoneware, so glaze fit and food safety matter more. Many potters fire functional work to cone 5 or 6 instead, which needs a mid or high fire kiln.

Fusing temperatures fall in this range, but a ceramic kiln heats from the sides rather than the lid, so heat across a flat piece is less even. For consistent fusing and slumping, use a kiln built for glass.
