Jen-Ken · Controllers · Orton AutoFire Orton AutoFire® 12-Button Remote Controller Orton AutoFire® 4000 · 12-button keypad · External plug-in controller An external digital controller that turns a manual kiln into a programmed one. The kiln plugs into the controller, the controller plugs into the wall, and the supplied thermocouple goes through a hole in the kiln to read chamber temperature. From then on the controller runs the firing — ramp rates, hold times, cone-fire schedules — instead of you standing over a kiln sitter turning switches by hand. The 12-button AutoFire is the full-keypad version: glass, PMC and cone-firing schedules come preprogrammed, with 25 slots left for programs of your own.

Common questions
Will this work with my kiln? Two rules from Jen-Ken. First, your kiln's amperage must be lower than the controller's amperage — this is the one people get wrong, so check the nameplate on your kiln before ordering. Second, it works only with manual kilns that you adjust by hand; it is not compatible with kilns already fitted with an auto turn-up device. Send us your kiln's make, model and amp draw and we will confirm it before you buy.
Which voltage, amperage and relay type does this one carry?Built to a selected voltage, amperage and relay type, and Jen-Ken's own page asks you to pick those before it shows a price. We list a single price here. Because the amperage rule above decides whether the controller is safe on your kiln, send us your kiln's make, model and nameplate amps and we will confirm the exact build before anything ships.
What does it actually change?A manual kiln holds whatever setting you last dialled in. A controller runs a schedule: climb at a set rate, hold at a set temperature, shut off on its own. That means repeatable firings and no sitting up with the kiln.
Do I need 12 buttons, or is the 3-button enough? Both run programmed firings. The 3-button is the straightforward end of the range; the 12-button keypad is quicker to program by hand and holds 25 of your own settings alongside the preloaded glass, PMC and cone schedules. If you fire one or two repeat schedules, the 3-button is usually plenty.
Who warrants it?Orton does — 2 years, direct from the manufacturer. Jen-Ken warrants no controller of any kind, and nothing in a Jen-Ken kiln warranty covers this unit. Keep your proof of purchase and we will help you open the claim with Orton.
Check the amperage before you order The single most common mistake with an external controller is fitting one rated below the kiln. Tell us your kiln's make, model and amp draw and we will confirm the right controller and the right build — it takes a minute and saves a return.

Common questions about this kiln

Still stuck? Call or text (470) 264-3563 and talk it through with a real person.

Is freight delivery included in the price?

No. Kiln prices do not include freight, and we do not quietly build it into the product price. Freight is charged at a flat rate based on your delivery address and is shown at checkout. Liftgate service is included when it is needed, and standard delivery is curbside. You can estimate your delivered cost with the ZIP code tool above the Add to Cart button.

Can I return this kiln if it is not right?

Return requests can be submitted within 30 days of delivery. The kiln needs to be in its original packaging, in new and resellable condition, and approved before it is sent back. A restocking fee may apply. Completing the manufacturer's recommended first test firing does not by itself make a kiln non-returnable, so you can confirm it works before you commit. Full terms are on our Returns page.

What electrical supply do I need for this kiln?

The Specifications tab on this page lists this model's voltage, amperage, required breaker size and NEMA plug configuration. Most 240V kilns need their own dedicated circuit fitted by a licensed electrician, while many 120V models run from a standard household outlet. If you are unsure what your space can support, call or text (470) 264-3563 before ordering.

Does this kiln come with a warranty?

Yes. This kiln carries the Jen-Ken manufacturer warranty. Coverage length, what is included and any registration deadline are listed in the Specifications tab on this page. We are an authorized Jen-Ken dealer, which is a condition of warranty coverage on most kiln brands.

What comes with the kiln, and what do I need to buy separately?

The What's Included tab on this page lists exactly what ships with this kiln. Most kilns need shelves, posts and kiln wash before your first firing, and these are not always included. A vent is recommended for indoor installations. Any add-ons available for this model are shown above the Add to Cart button.
