Jen-Ken · Glass Kiln · Chilipepper Annealer Jen-Ken Chilipepper Glass Annealing Oven Model AF3P Chilipepper · 120V · 16" x 6" x 6" chamber · 1,100°F The Chilipepper is an annealer, not a fusing kiln — read that before anything else, because the 1,100°F ceiling is deliberate and it will not fuse or slump glass. What it does is take beads and torchworked pieces straight off the mandrel and bring them down through the annealing range on a controlled schedule, so they do not crack a week later. Lampworkers have used it for decades for exactly that. It is 19 lbs: two inches of non-toxic blanket insulation inside a steel toolbox, with a flip door on the long side and heavy-gauge quartz-encased coils, which is why it survives being carried to classes and shows. It plugs into an ordinary wall outlet and draws 8 amps. It is also the one Jen-Ken model that is not built to order — they ship most Chilipeppers same or next business day.

Key features
Orton AutoFire 3-button controllerProgrammable ramp-and-hold firing, which is the whole point of an annealer — you need a controlled descent through the annealing range, not a switch.
Two-tube quartz-encased coilsHeavy-gauge coils run inside quartz tubes rather than being buried in the insulation. Jen-Ken's current build uses two tubes rather than one.
Steel toolbox bodyTwo inches of non-toxic blanket insulation inside a steel shell. It is 19 lbs and built to be carried, which is why travelling teachers buy it.
Flip doorThe door opens on the long side of the chamber — 16" x 3" x 6" of opening — so you can get a mandrel in without reaching over hot work.
Instruction manualJen-Ken's printed manual, including annealing guidance and their electrical requirements.
1-year kiln warranty, 2-year controllerOne year on the oven from Jen-Ken; the Orton controller carries its own two-year warranty from Orton.
Optional accessories
Bead mandrels and a wire rackThe Chilipepper anneals what you put in it; the rack and mandrels are yours to choose. Tell us how you work and we will point you at what fits a 16" x 6" x 6" chamber.
Kiln wash and shelf primerWorth having on hand even for annealing work, if anything is going to sit directly on the floor of the chamber.
Controller upgradeJen-Ken fits the Orton AutoFire 3-button as standard and offers the Orton AutoFire Slide touchscreen and the SDS TAP II in its place. It is a factory option rather than a checkout add-on — call us and we will quote it.
A fusing kiln to go with itAn annealer is not a fusing kiln and the Chilipepper will not become one. If you also want to fuse or slump, the Bonnie Glo or an AF3P 11/4.5 are the small 120V kilns that pair with it. Ask us and we will size the pair to one circuit.
Common questions
Is this a fusing kiln? No, and this is the thing most often got wrong about it. The Chilipepper's maximum temperature is 1,100°F. Glass fuses somewhere around 1,450–1,500°F and slumps from about 1,200°F, so the Chilipepper cannot do either — by design. It is an annealing oven: it holds and then slowly lowers the temperature of finished torchwork so the piece comes out of stress instead of cracking. If you want a small kiln that fuses, look at the Bonnie Glo at 1,700°F or the AF3P 11/4.5 at 2,000°F.
What electrical circuit does it need?120V single phase, an 8-amp draw and 960 watts on an ordinary NEMA 5-15R three-prong outlet, behind a 15-amp breaker with #14 copper. That is the one fully coherent electrical spec in Jen-Ken's glass range: 8 amps continuous needs 10 amps of breaker under the 125% rule and gets 15, #14 copper is good for 15 amps, and a 5-15R is a 15-amp device. No electrician, no service upgrade. Give it its own outlet anyway rather than sharing with a torch ventilation fan.
What cone will it reach?None, and that is not the question to ask of it. Jen-Ken publishes no cone rating for any kiln in their glass line, and this one tops out at 1,100°F — far below any ceramic cone and far below fusing temperature. It is an annealer. What matters is that it holds a soak accurately at annealing temperature, not how hot it will go.
How quickly does it ship? This is the exception in the Jen-Ken range. Everything else they build is made to order in Lakeland with a lead time of weeks to months; Jen-Ken's own guidance on the Chilipepper is that most ship within the same or next business day. Worth knowing that they do run out of stock periodically, so call us and we will confirm current availability before you count on it.
Can I take it to classes and shows? That is what it is for. Nineteen pounds, a steel toolbox body, and a normal wall plug. It is the reason the Chilipepper has lasted decades in a market full of lighter, cheaper competitors — the insulation is inside a shell that survives a car boot.
What is the door opening, exactly?Jen-Ken publishes the chamber as 16" x 6" x 6" and the door opening as 16" x 3" x 6". The opening is shallower than the chamber, which is normal for a flip-door annealer and is worth knowing if you are planning to load something bulky rather than beads on a mandrel.
Does buying from Peach State Pottery affect my warranty? No. We are an authorized Jen-Ken dealer, so the factory warranty applies exactly as it would buying direct. Jen-Ken gives the Chilipepper one year on the oven; the controller's two-year warranty comes from Orton. Keep your proof of purchase.
Annealing, or fusing? They are different kilns. We are authorized Jen-Ken dealers based in Georgia. Tell us what you are making — lampwork beads, torchworked sculpture, fused glass — and we will tell you whether an annealer is what you need or whether you want a fusing kiln instead.

Common questions about this kiln

Still stuck? Call or text (470) 264-3563 and talk it through with a real person.

Is freight delivery included in the price?

No. Kiln prices do not include freight, and we do not quietly build it into the product price. Freight is charged at a flat rate based on your delivery address and is shown at checkout. Liftgate service is included when it is needed, and standard delivery is curbside. You can estimate your delivered cost with the ZIP code tool above the Add to Cart button.

Can I return this kiln if it is not right?

Return requests can be submitted within 30 days of delivery. The kiln needs to be in its original packaging, in new and resellable condition, and approved before it is sent back. A restocking fee may apply. Completing the manufacturer's recommended first test firing does not by itself make a kiln non-returnable, so you can confirm it works before you commit. Full terms are on our Returns page.

What electrical supply do I need for this kiln?

The Specifications tab on this page lists this model's voltage, amperage, required breaker size and NEMA plug configuration. Most 240V kilns need their own dedicated circuit fitted by a licensed electrician, while many 120V models run from a standard household outlet. If you are unsure what your space can support, call or text (470) 264-3563 before ordering.

Does this kiln come with a warranty?

Yes. This kiln carries the Jen-Ken manufacturer warranty. Coverage length, what is included and any registration deadline are listed in the Specifications tab on this page. We are an authorized Jen-Ken dealer, which is a condition of warranty coverage on most kiln brands.

What comes with the kiln, and what do I need to buy separately?

The What's Included tab on this page lists exactly what ships with this kiln. Most kilns need shelves, posts and kiln wash before your first firing, and these are not always included. A vent is recommended for indoor installations. Any add-ons available for this model are shown above the Add to Cart button.
