Common questions
What types of steel can I heat treat in the KM36?
The KM36 reaches 2350°F, covering high-carbon steels (1095, 1084, 1075) and tool steels (O1, A2, D2) commonly used by custom knife makers. This range handles austenitizing temperatures for hardening as well as lower tempering ranges. Stainless steels requiring higher temperatures may need specialized equipment, but the KM36 covers the vast majority of carbon and alloy steels used in blade making.
Should I choose a swing door or a drop door?
Both give full access to the 36-inch chamber — the difference is mostly workflow and shop layout. A swing door opens to the side and is a familiar choice for most shops; a drop door opens downward and can double as a loading shelf when working with longer blades. Let us know your preference when ordering.
Do I need the Gas Injection Flow Meter for atmosphere control?
The GIFM is optional but recommended if you're concerned about oxidation and decarburization on blade surfaces. It lets you introduce inert gases like argon or nitrogen during heat treating for cleaner results and less post-firing surface grinding. Many makers get good results without it using foil wraps or anti-scale compounds, so it comes down to your finishing process.
How does the KM36 compare to the KM24 and KM45?
All three share the same 2350°F max temperature and 240V single-phase power, differing mainly in chamber depth — 24", 36", and 45" respectively. The KM36 is a strong middle ground for makers who regularly work with longer blades or batch-process multiple knives, without the extra footprint of the 45-inch KM45.
Can I purchase this oven through any dealer, and how does the warranty work?
Paragon warranties are only valid when purchased through authorized dealers like Peach State Pottery. You must register your oven within 30 days of delivery to activate the one-year limited warranty. As an authorized Paragon dealer, we provide full warranty support, technical assistance, and access to genuine replacement parts.
