Common questions
What types of steel can I heat treat in the KM24 Double Barrel?
The KM24 reaches 2350°F, which is sufficient for heat treating high-carbon steels (1095, 1084, W2), stainless steels (440C, AEB-L, 154CM), tool steels (O1, A2, D2), and Damascus steel. This temperature range covers the austenitizing temperatures for virtually all common knife-making alloys. For specialty stainless steels requiring atmosphere control, consider adding the optional gas inlet kit to prevent oxidation during heat treating.
Do I need the gas inlet for atmosphere control?
The gas inlet is optional and depends on your steel types and desired finish. For most high-carbon steels, air atmosphere is sufficient since you'll grind away scale during finishing. For stainless steels or when you want to minimize decarburization and surface oxidation, the gas inlet allows you to introduce argon or nitrogen for a protective atmosphere. Many professional knife makers start without it and add it later as their production demands increase.
What controller comes standard with this oven?
The KM24 includes a Sentinel Touch Xpress touchscreen controller with ramp and hold capabilities, allowing you to set target temperatures and soak times for proper heat treating cycles. You can upgrade to the Genesis touchscreen controller for more advanced programming features including 8-segment profiles, temperature graphing, and the ability to store multiple custom programs for different steel types.
How does the Double Barrel KM24 compare to single-chamber knife ovens?
The Double Barrel has the same 24-inch depth as the standard KM24 but a wider, taller chamber, so you can load more blades per cycle or fit wider pieces. It is one chamber with one controller, so everything in a load runs the same program. For small batch or hobby knife makers, the standard KM24 may be sufficient, but production bladesmiths benefit significantly from the extra capacity.
