Common questions
What steel types can I heat treat in the KM-36 Pro?
The KM-36 Pro reaches 2350°F, which covers virtually all knife steels including high-carbon steels (1084, 1095, 5160), tool steels (O1, A2, D2), and most stainless steels (440C, AEB-L, 154CM). This temperature is sufficient for proper austenitizing of common blade steels. Super-high alloy steels like S90V or Rex 121 requiring temperatures above 2350°F are not recommended. The ceramic fiber construction provides fast, even heating critical for proper hardening, and the optional gas inlet allows protective atmosphere to prevent decarburization on high-carbon steels.
Do I need to use the gas inlet for protective atmosphere?
Gas inlet use depends on your steel type and finish requirements. High-carbon steels (1084, 1095, 5160) benefit significantly from protective atmosphere (argon or nitrogen) to prevent surface decarburization and scaling, resulting in cleaner blades with less grinding required. Stainless steels are more forgiving and can often be heat treated in air, though atmosphere still improves results. Many knifemakers use foil wrapping as an alternative to gas atmosphere for smaller batches. On the KM-36 Pro the gas inlet and flowmeter are an optional upgrade, so choose that option when you order if you plan to use protective atmosphere.
What controller comes standard and what can it do?
The KM-36 Pro includes a Sentinel touchscreen controller with 3-zone control as standard equipment. This controller allows you to program custom heat treating cycles with multiple ramp rates and hold times—essential for proper austenitizing soaks and controlled cooling. You can save programs for different steel types and recall them for consistent results. Its three thermocouples keep the temperature even along the full chamber length. For advanced features like USB data logging and real-time temperature graphing, consider upgrading to the Genesis touchscreen controller.
How does the Double Barrel design compare to standard knife ovens?
The KM-36 Pro Double Barrel has one chamber that is much wider than a standard KM36 Pro, which greatly increases how many blades you can load per cycle. It is one chamber with one 3-zone controller, so everything in a load runs the same program. This extra capacity dramatically increases throughput for production knifemakers. The 36-inch chamber accommodates multiple long blades or dozens of smaller knives. If you're primarily making shorter knives or have limited production volume, a standard model may be more economical.
Is Peach State Pottery an authorized Paragon dealer for warranty coverage?
Yes, Peach State Pottery is an authorized Paragon dealer. Your KM-36 Pro includes a one-year limited warranty from Paragon that covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. This warranty is only valid when purchased through authorized dealers like Peach State Pottery and must be registered with Paragon within 30 days of delivery.
