Common questions
What types of steel can I heat treat in the KM9 Pro?
The KM9 Pro reaches 2350°F, making it suitable for heat treating high-carbon steels (1095, 1084, 1075), tool steels (O1, A2, D2), and many stainless knife steels (440C, AEB-L, 154CM). It provides sufficient temperature for austenitizing most common blade steels. For ultra-high alloy steels like S30V or M4 that require higher temperatures, consult steel-specific heat treating specifications.
Do I need a gas inlet for atmosphere control?
A gas inlet is optional but highly recommended for professional knife making. Introducing inert gases like argon or nitrogen creates a protective atmosphere that prevents oxidation and decarburization during heat treating, resulting in cleaner blades that require less post-heat-treat grinding. The standard KM9 Pro can be retrofitted with a gas inlet kit.
What controller comes standard with the KM9 Pro?
The KM9 Pro includes a single-zone Sentinel touchscreen controller with precision temperature monitoring and control. The controller allows you to set specific soak times and temperatures for consistent hardening and tempering cycles. Paragon's heat treating ovens are designed specifically for knife making applications with reliable, repeatable temperature control.
How does the double barrel design improve workflow?
The Double Barrel has a single chamber that is much wider than the standard KM9 Pro (13 inches wide), so you can load more blades side by side in one cycle. It is one chamber with one controller, so everything in a load runs the same program, but the extra width increases daily production capacity.
