Common questions
Do I need an electrician to install this kiln?Yes. The FL4.5E requires a dedicated 240V or 208V circuit with approximately 48 amps of service. This is not a plug-in appliance — a licensed electrician will need to run appropriate gauge wire from your breaker panel and install the proper disconnect. Plan for professional installation as part of your total setup cost.
What furniture kit do I need for this kiln?Olympic offers a furniture kit specifically sized for the FL4.5E that includes 4 layers of 18-inch round or square shelves, assorted posts for flexible stacking heights, and a 5 lb bag of kiln wash. You can also build a custom furniture set with individual shelves and posts if you have specific loading needs.
How much production work can this kiln handle? The FL4.5E is built for daily firing in educational and small production settings. The 4.5 cubic foot chamber holds roughly 100-125 mugs or 40-50 dinner plates per load depending on your packing method. Studios firing 3-5 times per week will find this kiln handles steady production volume while the tall 24-inch height accommodates larger sculptural work.
Should I add a solid state relay?Absolutely, especially for production use. The solid state relay provides tighter temperature control for more consistent results, extends your element life by reducing thermal shock, and lowers your electric bill through more efficient power cycling. Unlike mechanical relays with moving parts that eventually wear out, a solid state relay will likely last the entire life of your kiln.
Does buying from Peach State Pottery affect my warranty? No. We are an authorized Olympic Kilns dealer. Your one-year warranty is fully valid and you have direct access to Olympic’s factory support team. Buying from an unauthorized seller or the used market can void your warranty entirely.
