Common questions
What steel types can I heat treat in the HS-18K?
The HS-18K reaches 2200°F, making it suitable for hardening most common knife steels including 1095, 1084, 5160, 52100, O1, W2, and 15N20. High-alloy steels like D2 and A2 can be hardened at this temperature, though some premium stainless steels requiring higher austenitizing temperatures (S30V, S35VN) may need specialized equipment. The atmosphere capability allows protective gas during heat treating to prevent decarburization on high-carbon steels. For tempering cycles, this oven handles all steel types from 300°F to 1000°F.
Can I introduce atmosphere into the chamber during heat treating?
Yes, the HS-18K includes a gas inlet port specifically for introducing protective atmosphere during heat treating. Most knife makers use argon or nitrogen to prevent oxidation and scale formation on blade surfaces during austenitizing. This is especially important for high-carbon steels that are prone to decarburization at elevated temperatures. You'll need a separate gas regulator and delivery system, which can be purchased as an optional accessory. Always ensure proper ventilation when using atmosphere gases.
What's the difference between 120V and 240V models?
The 120V model plugs into a standard household outlet, making it convenient for small shops without dedicated electrical service. However, the 240V model heats faster and maintains temperature more efficiently during extended heat treating sessions or when door is opened frequently. If you're heat treating multiple blades per day or working with larger stock, the 240V option reduces cycle times significantly. Consult with a licensed electrician to determine which voltage is best for your electrical service and production needs.
Does this oven include the digital controller and solid state relay?
Yes, the HS-18K comes standard with both a digital controller and solid state relay (SSR). The SSR is critical for knife making because it extends element life and provides smoother temperature control during critical austenitizing holds. Unlike cheaper on/off controllers that cycle power abruptly, the solid state relay gradually modulates power for precise temperature maintenance within ±5°F. This precision is essential when heat treating steels with narrow hardening temperature windows.
Is my warranty valid if I don't buy from an authorized dealer?
No. Hot Shot warranties are only valid when purchased through authorized dealers like Peach State Pottery. Ovens purchased from unauthorized resellers, auction sites, or private parties have no manufacturer warranty coverage. Additionally, you must register your oven within 30 days of delivery to activate the one-year limited warranty. Authorized dealers provide proper documentation, support technical questions, and facilitate warranty service if needed.
Not sure if the HS-18K is the right heat treating oven for your knife shop? Our team can help you compare chamber sizes, voltage requirements, and atmosphere capabilities for your specific steel types and production volume.

Off-the-Shelf Stock Units

Standard stock units, including the HS-360, HS-1200, and HS-18K in unmodified condition, may be eligible for return under the conditions listed in this policy.

  • Approved stock unit returns are subject to a 25% restocking fee.
  • Returns must be initiated within 30 days of purchase.
  • The customer is responsible for prepaid freight back to the warehouse.
  • The product must pass inspection before a refund is approved.

If the product is not in as-new, resellable condition, you will be notified and offered the option to have it returned to you at your expense.

Modified Stock Units

Units upgraded or modified from their original stock configuration, including controller upgrades or custom configurations, are subject to a 25% restocking fee and must meet all other return conditions listed above.

Special Order & Custom Units

Special order or custom-made units are products specifically designed, modified, or manufactured to meet unique customer specifications.

These units are not returnable under any circumstances unless covered by an approved warranty claim.

Refurbished & Scratch & Dent Units

Refurbished units and scratch-and-dent models are discounted due to cosmetic flaws or handling damage. These units are fully tested and functional but are sold as-is and are not returnable.

Product Must Be Unopened

Any product whose carton seal has been broken, installed, energized, or marked in any way is not considered suitable for resale and will not be accepted for return.

Restocking Fee

Approved returns of eligible HotShot stock units are subject to a 25% restocking fee.

Original shipping costs are not credited or refunded. Return shipping is the customer’s responsibility unless otherwise stated under an approved warranty claim.

Return Process

To start a return, contact Peach State Pottery with your order information and reason for return. We will help coordinate the next steps.

  1. Request return authorization.
  2. Wait for RMA approval before shipping anything back.
  3. Repackage the product carefully in its original, unmarked packaging.
  4. Ship the product prepaid and insured to the designated return address.
  5. The product will be inspected after arrival.
  6. If approved, your refund or credit will be processed.

Return Shipping Damage

Peach State Pottery is not responsible for damage incurred during return shipping.

We strongly recommend taking photos of the return packaging before shipment and using a prepaid, insured shipping method. Any damage that occurs during return shipping may be deducted from your refund.

Refunds

Once your return is received and inspected, you will be notified whether your refund has been approved or rejected.

If approved, the refund will be issued back to the original payment method. Please allow time for your bank or credit card company to process the refund after it has been issued.

Late or Missing Refunds

If your refund has been approved but has not appeared yet, please check your bank or credit card statement, contact your card issuer or bank, and then contact Peach State Pottery if you still need help.

Exchanges

Exchanges are generally only available for items that are defective, damaged, or approved under the applicable manufacturer policy.
