Can I use the Kingpin 88 for both metal clay and glass bead annealing?Yes. While designed primarily as a metal clay kiln, the Kingpin 88 works excellently for glass bead annealing when equipped with the optional bead door. The 1650°F max temperature covers the full range needed for precious metal clay firing and lampwork bead annealing. Many artists use one kiln for both applications.
Will this kiln work in my home studio or do I need special electrical?The Kingpin 88 plugs into any standard 120V household outlet—no electrician or special wiring required. At 14.6 amps draw, it works on a standard 15-amp circuit, though we recommend a dedicated circuit if you'll be firing frequently. This makes it ideal for home studios, apartments, or anywhere you have access to regular wall power.
What's the difference between the 18 preset programs and the 4 user programs?The 18 presets are factory-programmed firing schedules specifically designed for Metal Adventures, Art Clay, PMC, and Prometheus metal clay products—you can use them immediately without any programming. The 4 user program slots let you create and save your own custom firing schedules for experimental work, specific clay formulas, or glass applications that require unique ramp rates and hold times.
How does the Quiet Drive relay differ from standard kiln relays?Standard mechanical relays click on and off, creating noise and wearing out over time from moving parts. Evenheat's patented Quiet Drive solid state relay has zero moving parts and pulses power 60 times per second instead of cycling fully on/off.
