Common questions
What types of steel can I heat treat in the KM36 Pro?
The KM36 Pro reaches 2350°F, which is sufficient for virtually all knife-making steels including high-carbon steels (1095, 1084, 5160), tool steels (O1, A2, D2), and spring steels (W2, 52100). This temperature range covers austenitizing requirements for most common blade alloys. For specialized stainless steels requiring higher temps (440C, ATS-34), verify your specific heat treating temperature requirements.
Do I need a gas inlet port for atmosphere control?
The standard KM36 Pro does not include an atmosphere inlet port, but one can be added as an optional accessory. Most bladesmiths heat treat successfully in ambient atmosphere for common steels. Controlled atmosphere (argon or nitrogen) is beneficial for preventing scale formation on finished blades or when working with reactive alloys, but is not required for basic heat treating operations.
What controller comes standard, and can I program heat treat cycles?
The KM36 Pro includes a digital controller with programmable features for creating custom heat treating cycles. You can program multi-step processes including ramp rates, soak times, and hold temperatures. For advanced features like unlimited program storage and data logging, consider upgrading to the Genesis Touchscreen controller.
How does the KM36 Pro compare to other knife oven models?
The KM36 Pro is designed specifically for full-size blades with its 36-inch vertical chamber—ideal for swords, long knives, and multiple blades standing upright. Smaller knife ovens may be sufficient for folders and EDC knives under 12 inches. The ceramic fiber construction provides faster heating than traditional brick kilns, which is valuable for preventing grain growth during austenitizing.
Is this purchase covered by warranty if I buy from Peach State Pottery?
Yes. Peach State Pottery is an authorized Paragon dealer, which means your KM36 Pro includes the full one-year limited manufacturer warranty. Purchasing from unauthorized dealers voids the warranty. You must register your oven within 30 days of delivery to activate coverage.
