Common questions
What steel types can I heat treat in the HS-1200K?
The HS-1200K reaches 2200°F, making it suitable for hardening and tempering most carbon steels (1084, 1095, 15N20), tool steels (O1, A2, D2), and many stainless steels (440C, AEB-L). For Damascus or pattern-welded steels, the chamber accommodates billets up to 10″ wide. High-alloy steels requiring austenitizing temperatures above 2100°F (such as CPM-154 or S30V) will reach their critical temperature range. Consult your steel supplier's heat treat specification sheets for exact hardening temperatures and soak times.
Can I add atmosphere capability for scale-free heat treating?
Yes. The optional atmosphere port kit allows you to introduce inert gas (argon or nitrogen) during the heat treat cycle to prevent oxidation and scale formation on blades. This is especially valuable when hardening stainless steels or when you want to minimize surface cleanup before grinding. You'll need to source your own gas supply and regulator—most knife makers use a standard welding gas cylinder with a low-pressure regulator. The oven is not designed for explosive or flammable atmospheres.
Does the standard controller handle complex tempering cycles?
The included digital controller supports ramp/hold programming, which covers most heat treat operations including multi-stage tempering. You can program a ramp to your hardening temperature, hold for the required soak time, then cool and ramp back up for tempering. For knife makers who run frequent batches with different steel types or need to store dozens of custom programs, the Genesis touchscreen upgrade offers expanded memory and a more user-friendly interface for cycling between recipes.
What's the advantage of the solid state relay being included standard?
Hot Shot includes SSRs as standard equipment because they significantly extend element life and provide smoother temperature control compared to mechanical contactors. SSRs eliminate the clicking and arcing associated with relay switching, reduce voltage spikes that can damage heating elements, and allow for more precise temperature modulation. For a heat treat oven that cycles frequently to different temperatures, this translates to lower long-term operating costs and more consistent results across your blades.
Is the HS-1200K covered by warranty if I buy from Peach State Pottery?
Yes. Peach State Pottery is an authorized Hot Shot dealer, so your HS-1200K is covered by the manufacturer's one-year limited warranty. You must register the oven within 30 days of delivery to activate coverage. Warranty is only valid on units purchased through authorized dealers—purchasing from unauthorized resellers or used equipment voids manufacturer support. Contact us if you have questions about your warranty registration or need service assistance.
Not sure if the HS-1200K is the right oven for your blade shop? Our team can help you compare chamber sizes, discuss atmosphere options, and ensure your electrical setup matches the oven requirements.

Off-the-Shelf Stock Units

Standard stock units, including the HS-360, HS-1200, and HS-18K in unmodified condition, may be eligible for return under the conditions listed in this policy.

  • Approved stock unit returns are subject to a 25% restocking fee.
  • Returns must be initiated within 30 days of purchase.
  • The customer is responsible for prepaid freight back to the warehouse.
  • The product must pass inspection before a refund is approved.

If the product is not in as-new, resellable condition, you will be notified and offered the option to have it returned to you at your expense.

Modified Stock Units

Units upgraded or modified from their original stock configuration, including controller upgrades or custom configurations, are subject to a 25% restocking fee and must meet all other return conditions listed above.

Special Order & Custom Units

Special order or custom-made units are products specifically designed, modified, or manufactured to meet unique customer specifications.

These units are not returnable under any circumstances unless covered by an approved warranty claim.

Refurbished & Scratch & Dent Units

Refurbished units and scratch-and-dent models are discounted due to cosmetic flaws or handling damage. These units are fully tested and functional but are sold as-is and are not returnable.

Product Must Be Unopened

Any product whose carton seal has been broken, installed, energized, or marked in any way is not considered suitable for resale and will not be accepted for return.

Restocking Fee

Approved returns of eligible HotShot stock units are subject to a 25% restocking fee.

Original shipping costs are not credited or refunded. Return shipping is the customer’s responsibility unless otherwise stated under an approved warranty claim.

Return Process

To start a return, contact Peach State Pottery with your order information and reason for return. We will help coordinate the next steps.

  1. Request return authorization.
  2. Wait for RMA approval before shipping anything back.
  3. Repackage the product carefully in its original, unmarked packaging.
  4. Ship the product prepaid and insured to the designated return address.
  5. The product will be inspected after arrival.
  6. If approved, your refund or credit will be processed.

Return Shipping Damage

Peach State Pottery is not responsible for damage incurred during return shipping.

We strongly recommend taking photos of the return packaging before shipment and using a prepaid, insured shipping method. Any damage that occurs during return shipping may be deducted from your refund.

Refunds

Once your return is received and inspected, you will be notified whether your refund has been approved or rejected.

If approved, the refund will be issued back to the original payment method. Please allow time for your bank or credit card company to process the refund after it has been issued.

Late or Missing Refunds

If your refund has been approved but has not appeared yet, please check your bank or credit card statement, contact your card issuer or bank, and then contact Peach State Pottery if you still need help.

Exchanges

Exchanges are generally only available for items that are defective, damaged, or approved under the applicable manufacturer policy.
