What's the difference between fusing and slumping in this kiln?
Fusing occurs at higher temperatures (1400–1500°F) where glass pieces fully bond together on a flat surface. Slumping happens at lower temperatures (1200–1400°F) where fused glass softens and drapes over or into a mold to create dimensional forms. The HS-24G's 1700°F maximum temperature accommodates both processes with precise SSR control for accurate temperature holds during critical ramp and soak periods.
Can I fire ceramic or pottery in this glass kiln?
No. The HS-24G is designed specifically for glass work with a maximum temperature of 1700°F. Ceramic bisque firing requires temperatures around 1945°F (Cone 04) and glaze firing requires 2232°F or higher (Cone 6). This kiln does not reach the temperatures necessary for ceramic work and should only be used for glass fusing, slumping, and annealing.
What electrical service do I need for the HS-24G?
The HS-24G requires 240V single-phase power. You'll need a licensed electrician to install the appropriate circuit, breaker, receptacle, and wire gauge based on the kiln's amperage specifications. Contact Hot Shot or your dealer for the complete electrical specification sheet to provide your electrician before installation. Never attempt electrical installation yourself—improper wiring voids the warranty and creates serious safety hazards.
How do I properly anneal glass in this kiln?
Annealing requires holding the glass at a specific temperature (typically 900–1050°F depending on glass type) to relieve internal stress, then slowly cooling at a controlled rate. The HS-24G's solid state relay system allows you to program precise annealing schedules with accurate temperature holds and controlled cooling ramps. Consult your glass manufacturer's annealing charts for specific temperatures and soak times based on glass thickness and coefficient of expansion (COE).
