Common questions
What size pieces can I fire in the RM II 1822?With an 18" diameter and 22.5" depth, you can fire pieces up to about 16-17" wide (leaving clearance from the walls) and stack shelves to about 20" tall. This works well for medium platters, tall vases, and multiple smaller pieces. The depth gives you flexibility to fire taller sculptural work or stack three to four shelf levels for production runs.
Do I need a dedicated 240V circuit for this kiln?Yes. The RM II 1822 draws 48 amps at 240V, so you'll need a dedicated 50-amp circuit with proper gauge wire. This is standard for mid-size ceramic kilns and should be installed by a licensed electrician. The kiln does not come with a cord—your electrician will hardwire it or install an appropriate outlet and matching plug.
How does block insulation compare to fiber insulation?The RM II uses 2.5" American-built bricks with 1" mineral wool backup insulation. This block construction provides superior structural strength, even heat distribution, and longer element life compared to fiber-only kilns. Brick kilns also maintain temperature stability better and are more durable for frequent high-fire use, though they take slightly longer to heat up initially.
What's the difference between Rampmaster II and Set-Pro controls?The Rampmaster II offers basic digital control with simple ramp/hold programming suitable for straightforward firing schedules. The Set-Pro is a step up with more programs and easier programming. For the best experience, we recommend upgrading to the Genesis Spark or TAP touchscreen controllers, which offer modern interfaces, more programming capacity, and connectivity features.
