Common questions
What electrical work is required for the 1414HE?
The 1414HE requires a 240V single-phase circuit with a 30-amp breaker and 10 AWG copper wire with ground. Most installations require a licensed electrician to install a dedicated circuit. Hardwiring is recommended over a plug connection for safety and code compliance. The kiln should be located within reasonable distance of your electrical panel to minimize wire runs.
Does this kiln include kiln furniture?
No, kiln shelves and posts are sold separately. We recommend purchasing a furniture kit specifically sized for the 14.5-inch chamber diameter. A typical setup includes 2-3 full round shelves plus half-shelves for efficient stacking, along with posts in various heights (1″, 2″, 3″, and 4″).
What can I fit inside a 1.4 cubic foot test kiln?
The 14.5″ × 13.5″ chamber accommodates approximately 30-40 glaze test tiles per firing, or several small production pieces like 4-inch bowls or 6-inch cylinders. It's ideal for glaze testing, jewelry, small sculpture, and experimental work where you need high-fire results without committing to a full production kiln load.
How do I register the warranty?
Olympic Kilns requires warranty registration within 30 days of delivery. You'll register directly with Olympic through their website using your purchase documentation from Peach State Pottery. The one-year limited warranty covers manufacturing defects and workmanship but does not cover wear items like elements, thermocouples, or firebrick, which are considered consumables.
Should I upgrade to an SSR with this kiln?
A Solid State Relay upgrade is highly recommended for test kilns that fire frequently. SSRs extend element life by 50% or more by providing smoother power delivery without the mechanical wear of standard contactors. For a test kiln that may fire multiple times per week, the SSR upgrade typically pays for itself within two years through reduced element replacement costs.
