Common questions
What steel types can I heat treat in the HS-1200?
The 2000°F maximum temperature accommodates most knife and tool steels including 1095, 1084, 5160, O1, A2, and other carbon and low-alloy steels requiring austenitizing temperatures below 2000°F. High-speed steels and some stainless grades requiring temperatures above 2000°F are not suitable for this model. Consult steel manufacturer data sheets for specific austenitizing temperatures and verify compatibility before processing.
Can I introduce atmosphere into the chamber during heat treating?
Yes — the HS-1200 includes a gas inlet port for introducing protective atmosphere during heat treating. Nitrogen, argon, or commercial forming gas can be introduced to reduce surface oxidation and prevent decarburization on blades and tools. The chamber is not sealed for positive-pressure atmosphere control, but gas flow through the inlet and natural venting provides adequate protection for most knife making and small tool applications. External regulators and flow control equipment required (sold separately).
What does the solid state relay do compared to standard mechanical relays?
The included solid state relay (SSR) provides silent, contactless switching of heating elements with no mechanical wear parts. SSRs enable smooth temperature ramping required for precise heat treat profiles, reduce temperature overshoot during critical austenitizing holds, and extend controller lifespan by eliminating relay contact degradation. Standard mechanical relays cycle elements fully on or off, creating temperature fluctuations unsuitable for consistent hardening results across multiple batches.
Do I need an electrician to install this oven?
Yes — the HS-1200 requires a dedicated 240V circuit installed by a licensed electrician in compliance with National Electrical Code and local building codes. The oven does not include a power cord — hardwired installation or appropriate receptacle and cord configuration must be determined based on your electrical service and oven specifications. Consult the owner's manual for exact amperage, breaker, and wire gauge requirements before scheduling electrical work.
Is my warranty valid if I buy from Peach State Pottery?
Yes — Peach State Pottery is an authorized Hot Shot Ovens dealer, and all equipment purchased through us includes full manufacturer warranty coverage. You must register your oven within 30 days of delivery to activate warranty protection. Hot Shot Ovens does not honor warranties on equipment purchased from unauthorized resellers or used equipment vendors.
Not sure if the HS-1200 is the right oven for your heat treating needs? Our kiln specialists help knife makers and tool makers select the correct chamber size, temperature range, and atmosphere capability for their steel types and production volume.

Warranty & Product Support

We stand behind every kiln and piece of equipment we sell. Most products include the manufacturer’s standard warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship.

If you receive a damaged or defective item, note it at delivery and email clear photos to sales@peachstatepottery.com the same day. We’ll handle replacement or repair at no cost to you and cover return shipping for approved claims.

Please retain all original packaging until the issue is resolved.

Manufacturer’s Recommended First Firing is allowed without affecting your return eligibility, as long as the kiln is returned in excellent, like-new condition with all original parts and packaging.
