The KO 18 is the most popular heat treating oven in the KO Series, engineered specifically for knife makers and machinists who need precise, repeatable hardening cycles. Built with 3" firebrick insulation and special high-temperature element alloy, it reaches 2400°F with faster heat-up times and tighter temperature control than standard ovens. What’s included
Side-Opening DoorFull 180° swing puts the super-heated door well away from you during quenching operations. Spring-loaded phenolic handle stays cool to the touch and serves as both handle and latch.
3" Firebrick ConstructionThicker than standard 2.5" brick, using Thermal Ceramics insulating firebrick made exclusively in Augusta, Georgia. Provides faster heat-up and higher temperature potential.

Common questions
What steels can I heat treat in the KO 18 at 2400°F?At 2400°F maximum, the KO 18 handles virtually every blade steel including high-carbon steels (1095, 1084, O1), stainless steels (440C, AEB-L, 154CM), and even high-alloy tool steels and powdered metallurgy steels. This temperature range covers austenitizing requirements for all common knife making alloys and most exotic alloys.
Why is the side-opening door better than a drop-down door?During quenching, you need to quickly remove super-heated blades from the chamber. A drop-down door stays directly in front of you, radiating intense heat at your hands and face. The side-opening door swings a full 180° away, keeping that radiant heat well to the side while you focus on safely grabbing and quenching your work. The front-mounted cool-touch handle is also easier to operate one-handed while holding tongs.
How does the 3" firebrick improve performance?The extra half-inch of insulation compared to standard 2.5" brick reduces heat loss, which translates to faster heat-up times, more stable holding temperatures, and lower energy costs per cycle. For heat treating where precise temperature control is critical, this improved insulation helps the controller maintain tighter tolerances, especially during long soak times at austenitizing temperatures.
Do I need the Quiet Drive Solid State Relay upgrade?For precision heat treating work, yes. The Quiet Drive SSR fires 60 times per second with no moving parts, delivering much tighter temperature control than mechanical contactors. This means less temperature swing during critical soak phases, more repeatable results across batches, and quieter operation. For professional knife makers or anyone doing production heat treating, it's worth the investment.
