The way it is used is a sequence, not a single temperature: up to 2,300°F to get the cullet melted, down to around 2,050–2,100°F to gather, down to 1,800°F for controlled squeezing and for holding between sessions. Solid-state relays are fitted as standard, which is what lets it sit at a working temperature for hours without mechanical relay wear. It is 150 lbs on a 240V 45-amp circuit — a serious electrical job, and worth noting that we have left the breaker row blank because Jen-Ken's published figure cannot be wired to their own receptacle. Like all electric crucible kilns it melts cullet, not raw batch.

PurposeMelting cullet

Max Temp2,300°F

Chamber18" x 13"

Power240V · 45A

What’s included

Solid-state relaysFitted as standard. They list a 60-amp breaker behind a NEMA 6-50R receptacle — a 6-50R is a 50-amp device and must not sit on a 60-amp circuit. The wiring table in Jen-Ken's own owner's manual gives every 45-amp kiln in their range #6 wire, a 50-amp fuse and a 6-50R, which is coherent but contradicts the page here. The breaker size is one of the two figures you hand your electrician, so we will not print one we cannot stand behind. Those are published above and agree across Jen-Ken's sources. #6 copper carries 65 amps at 75°C, so the wire is sized for whatever the breaker question resolves to. Jen-Ken's manual adds that more than about 30 feet from the panel may need the next heavier gauge, which on a melting kiln that runs for hours is worth taking seriously.

What is the firing sequence?Jen-Ken publishes it in stages rather than as one number, and it is the useful way to think about the kiln. Up to 2,300°F to melt the cullet; 2,050–2,100°F to gather; 1,800°F for controlled squeezing; and 1,800°F to hold between working sessions. The 2,300°F ceiling is what you need to get there, but most of the kiln's working life is spent well below it.

Can I make glass from batch in it?No — Jen-Ken says so explicitly, and it is worth repeating because it is the mistake that ruins one of these kilns. The published maximum is in the table above. Cone numbers are a ceramics measure and this is a glass-melting kiln, so the temperature and how steadily it holds it are the figures that matter.

How is this different from the Crucible 11?Volume and the electrical job. The 1813 is 18" x 13" at 1.91 cubic feet on a 45-amp circuit; the Crucible 11 is 11" x 9" at 0.55 cubic feet on 17 amps and comes with three crucibles for holding several colours. Buy the 1813 when you need a bigger melt and are prepared for a 50-amp-class dedicated run; buy the 11 for roll-ups and multi-colour work on a much lighter circuit.

What actually comes in the crate?Jen-Ken lists the Orton AutoFire 3-button controller, a kiln shelf, kiln brick, a kiln stand, solid-state relays and the instruction manual.
