It is one kiln with two element circuits, not a compromise between them.

What electrical circuit does it need?Size it to the ceramic draw, not the glass draw. This kiln pulls 36A when the lid coils are firing glass and 42A when the side coils are firing ceramics, and the circuit has to carry the larger of the two: 240V single phase, NEMA 6-50R receptacle, 50A breaker, #6 copper. That is what Jen-Ken's standard 2422 page specifies and what the wiring table in their owner's manual specifies, and it is what we publish on both the standard and the 3" build.

Why do your breaker and wire figures differ from Jen-Ken's page for this model?Because Jen-Ken's 3" page gets it wrong, and we are not going to repeat it. That page lists only the 36-amp glass figure and then sizes the circuit to it — a 40A breaker and #8 wire — while still calling for a NEMA 6-50R, which is a 50-amp device. Two things are wrong with that. A 6-50R does not belong on a 40-amp circuit, and sizing a dual-media kiln's circuit to its lighter duty cycle leaves you under-protected the first time you fire ceramics at 42 amps. Jen-Ken's own current price list gives the standard and the 3" build identical electrical specs, and their owner's manual gives this model #6 wire and a 50A fuse. So we publish 50A and #6 on both, and we do not publish the 40A or the #8 at all.

What cone will it reach?Cone 8. Jen-Ken’s website rates this kiln cone 8 but prints 2,150°F beside it, and those two do not agree — cone 8 matures around 2,280°F. Jen-Ken’s September 2025 dealer price list settles it: the 3-inch-brick Ceram-a-Glass models are rated to 2,300°F in ceramic mode, not 2,150°F. At 2,300°F the cone 8 rating holds, and the figure on their web page is the one that is wrong. That puts mid-range stoneware and cone 6 glaze comfortably in range. It is still not a cone 10 kiln.

Is the 3-inch brick worth the difference? If you anneal thick glass or fire more than about once a week, yes — thicker walls hold a soak more steadily and cost less in power.
