Nine inches of height is what the extra money buys, and it is the difference between shallow slumps and being able to stand a proper draping mould or a floral form up inside. At 35 lbs on a normal wall outlet it is still a kiln you can carry, which is why teachers and studios that fire around a day job buy it. The chamber is 15 inches across and 9 deep — 0.92 cubic feet — and it is rated 1,700°F, so it fuses and slumps but will not cast and will not fire clay.

Max Temp1,700°F

Chamber15" x 9"

Capacity0.92 cu ft

Power120V · 13A

What’s included

Orton AutoFire 3-button controllerProgrammable ramp-and-hold firing with blank user programs, not a manual switch — which is what makes a same-evening fuse schedule repeatable.

All-fiber chamberRigid fiber rather than brick. We would take the 20-amp advice, and here is the arithmetic behind that: a kiln is a continuous load, and the 125% rule puts a 13-amp draw at 16.25 amps — over a 15-amp breaker. The catch is that #14 copper is only rated for 15 amps, so a 20-amp circuit needs #12, not the #14 Jen-Ken lists. Those two published figures are the 15-amp pairing; if your electrician runs the preferred 20-amp circuit, have them run #12 with it. Jen-Ken's own framing for the Bonnie Glo line is two to three firings a day — start a firing after work, finish by bedtime, cool overnight — and pendants in under an hour. That is not something a brick kiln of the same size will do. The trade-offs are a softer interior that does not take knocks the way brick does, a 1,700°F ceiling so no casting and no clay, and a one-year kiln warranty rather than two.

What cone will it reach?Jen-Ken publishes no cone rating for any kiln in their glass line, and we have not invented one. Same 15-inch chamber diameter, same 120V 13-amp circuit, same 1,700°F, same fiber construction, same warranty terms. This one is 9 inches deep at 0.92 cubic feet; the standard is 6 inches at 0.61. The Tall also includes a kiln stand and kiln wash, which the standard does not. Jen-Ken's own pitch for the Tall is taller slumping projects and floral form moulds — if all your work is flat, the standard saves you money.

Will it fire clay? No. 1,700°F is a glass ceiling and a fiber chamber is not built for clay dust and glaze. For clay, look at Jen-Ken's ceramic line or the Ceram-a-Glass models, which they rate to 2,100°F and above and list for both media.

Is it really good for two or three firings a day? That is Jen-Ken's own claim for the line and it follows from the construction. A fiber chamber holds very little heat, so it climbs fast and drops fast — the constraint on turning work around becomes the annealing schedule your glass needs, not the kiln cooling down. Jen-Ken quotes pendants in under an hour. The practical caveat is that fiber is softer than brick, so it wants a bit more care in loading and unloading than a brick chamber does.

What actually comes in the crate?Jen-Ken lists the Orton AutoFire 3-button controller, a kiln stand, kiln wash, the instruction manual and the warranty. A shelf is not on that list, so ask us and we will put one in with the kiln so you can fire it the day it arrives.

How long until it ships?Jen-Ken builds to order in Lakeland, Florida. Note the split: Jen-Ken warrants fiber kilns for one year and brick kilns for two, and this is a fiber kiln. The controller's own two-year warranty comes from Orton, not Jen-Ken.
