It is rigid fiber rather than brick, so the chamber is essentially pure insulation with nothing much to heat up — Jen-Ken's line is that only the glass gets hot — and it climbs and cools fast enough for two or three firings in a day, or a pendant in under an hour. That makes it the kiln for people who fuse around a job: start a firing in the evening, finish before bed, unload in the morning. It is 25 lbs, it plugs into a wall outlet, and the lid hinges and props so you load it one-handed. The chamber is 15 inches across and 6 deep, which suits jewellery, tiles, small plates and flat panels. If you slump into taller moulds, the Bonnie Glo Tall is the same kiln with nine inches of height.

Max Temp1,700°F

Chamber15" x 6"

Capacity0.61 cu ft

Power120V · 13A

What’s included

Orton AutoFire 3-button controllerProgrammable ramp-and-hold firing with blank user programs, not a manual switch — which is what makes a same-evening fuse schedule repeatable.

All-fiber chamberRigid fiber rather than brick. We would take the 20-amp advice, and here is the arithmetic behind that: a kiln is a continuous load, and the 125% rule puts a 13-amp draw at 16.25 amps — over a 15-amp breaker. The catch is that #14 copper is only rated for 15 amps, so a 20-amp circuit needs #12, not the #14 Jen-Ken lists. Those two published figures are the 15-amp pairing; if your electrician runs the preferred 20-amp circuit, have them run #12 with it. That is not something a brick kiln of the same size will do. What is published is the maximum temperature, which is in the table above. Cone numbers are a ceramics measure; for glass work the temperature and the firing schedule are what matter.

Will it fire clay? No. 1,700°F is a glass ceiling and a fiber chamber is not built for clay dust and glaze. If you want to fire clay, look at Jen-Ken's ceramic line or the Ceram-a-Glass models, which they rate to 2,100°F and above and list for both media.

How big a piece will it take? The chamber is 15 inches across and 6 inches deep. That is comfortable for jewellery runs, tiles, coasters, small plates and flat panels up to about that diameter. Six inches of height limits you to shallow slumps — for taller moulds and floral forms, the Bonnie Glo Tall gives you nine.

How is this different from the Bonnie Glo Tall?Height only. Same 15-inch chamber, same 120V 13-amp circuit, same 1,700°F, same fiber construction, same warranty. This one is 6 inches deep at 0.61 cubic feet; the Tall is 9 inches at 0.92. The Tall also ships with a kiln stand and kiln wash, which this one does not. Buy this one for flat work and jewellery; buy the Tall if you slump into moulds.

What actually comes in the crate?Jen-Ken's list for this model is the Orton AutoFire 3-button controller, the instruction manual and the warranty — note that a stand and a shelf are not on it.
